Historical records are normally not accurate enough to pinpoint the moment in a legend's life where his career began. For McCoy Tyner, the moment came in his thirteenth year. He was a singer in the school choir. His mother, spotting his interest in music, offered him the option of taking voice lessons or piano lessons; she herself was a talent on the piano, although with no formal training. Needless to day, McCoy Tyner chose the piano lessons, and the development of jazz in the latter half of the Twentieth century was forever changed. His lessons were at the Philadelphia Music Center with a Mr. Haverstraw. Tyner later described his first teacher as patient, which was just what he needed at age thirteen. After a short time with lessons, Tyner showed incredible talent and love for the piano, and began playing constantly. His father was not pleased with McCoy's obsession; he saw his interests in music leading him to a dead end in life. But McCoy was undeterred. He practiced everyday after school at one of three neighbor's houses. His mother, a beautician, wholeheartedly supported his efforts, and saved money for an entire year to buy Tyner his first instrument, a spinet. It was not allowed in the home by the rule of McCoy's father, so McCoy began practicing at his mother's beauty parlor, to the delight of the workers and customers. Tyner soon began theory lessons at the Granoff School of Music, and also organized a local seven-piece rhythm and blues band. The band emulated musicians like Earl Bostic, and won some local fame by winning a talent show at the Uptown Theater hosted by Mantan Moreland. Tyner was playing professionally by the age of fifteen, travelling to Atlantic City during the summers to play in various clubs. He often played with another child wonder, trumpeter Lee Morgan from North Philly. They originally met playing at fraternity parties in the city, and played at the Cotton Club in Atlantic City on the second stage. There, Tyner met notables such as Dinah Washington, Wynton Kelly, and J.J. Johnson. McCoy also played in clubs like King's Bar and Ballabar with tenor saxophonist Paul Jefferies, bassist Carl Jones and drummer Goldie Campbell. At the time, the young pianist was forced to lie about his age to gain entrance in the clubs he performed in. Tyner claims his influences as including Richie and Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk. When Tyner was just starting his career at the age of sixteen he met Bud Powell and learned much from this legend of jazz piano. Tyner was hired by saxophonist Benny Golson directly after his high school graduation tp play at the Jazz Workshop in San Fransisco. Soon after, he joined the Jazztet led by Golson and Art Farmer.
